How to explain to patients why antibiotics aren't needed for viral URIs
#1
I'm a family physician and I'm increasingly frustrated by patient expectations for antibiotics for clear viral upper respiratory infections, often fueled by pressure to get back to work quickly. I follow stewardship principles, but the conversation sometimes becomes adversarial, eating into limited appointment time. For other primary care providers, what phrasing or educational resources have you found most effective for explaining why antibiotics aren't appropriate, while still validating the patient's discomfort and providing supportive care strategies that make them feel heard and helped?
