How to discuss antibiotic resistance with patients during brief viral visits?
#1
I'm a general practitioner, and I'm increasingly frustrated and concerned by the number of patients who present with mild, likely viral infections and demand antibiotics, often citing a previous prescription that "worked." This pressure, coupled with the very real threat of antibiotic resistance, puts me in a difficult position during short consultations. For other healthcare providers, how do you effectively communicate the risks of unnecessary antibiotic use to patients in a way that is educational but doesn't undermine their concerns? Have you found any specific resources or communication strategies that help patients understand the difference between bacterial and viral infections and the long-term public health implications of resistance?
