I've been a painter for years, working primarily in acrylics, but I've recently become fascinated with mixed media art techniques after seeing some incredible textural pieces that incorporate paper collage, fabric, and even small found objects. My first few attempts have been frustrating, though, as my layers of paint, ink, and paper either look muddy and overworked or they fail to adhere properly, with elements peeling or warping as the piece dries. For artists experienced in building complex mixed media surfaces, what are your fundamental rules for material compatibility and layering order? What specific adhesives or sealants do you trust for combining such diverse elements, and how do you plan a piece to maintain visual cohesion when introducing so many different textures and materials?
