I was recently diagnosed with hypertension, and my doctor has me starting on a low-dose medication while also recommending lifestyle changes. I'm trying to understand how to effectively manage this long-term beyond just taking a pill. I've started walking daily and cutting back on salt, but I'm confused by conflicting advice about things like caffeine, specific diets like DASH, and how to accurately monitor my blood pressure at home. For others who have been managing hypertension for years, what practical daily habits made the most significant difference for you? How did you navigate dietary changes without making every meal a stressful calculation, and are there reliable resources or tools you used to track your progress and stay motivated?
You're doing the right thing by focusing on lifestyle along with meds. For me, consistent daily activity (walks, a short brisk session 3–4x/wk), steady sleep, and a firm sodium cap (<1500 mg/day when possible) made the biggest difference over months. I still take meds as prescribed and track my BP, but the trend matters more than single readings.
