Most software reviews are written by experts who already know what they're doing. I want to hear beginner video editing software reviews from people who were actually beginners when they started using the software.

What was your experience like learning the software? How long did it take you to make your first complete video? What frustrated you, and what felt intuitive?

This would be super helpful for anyone looking for free video editing for first-timers who wants to know what the actual beginner experience is like.
As an actual beginner (started 6 months ago), here's my beginner video editing software reviews:

OpenShot: First video took about an hour. The timeline made sense immediately. Frustrating part was figuring out how to export properly (had to Google it). Felt intuitive overall.

Shotcut: Took longer to learn (maybe 3 hours for first video). More powerful but also more confusing. The interface has lots of panels that I didn't understand at first. Worth the learning curve though.

DaVinci Resolve: Overwhelming. Made my first video in a weekend with tutorials. Now that I know it, it's amazing, but the beginning was rough.

For free video editing for first-timers, I'd say start with OpenShot.
I teach beginners, so I see this from the instructor side. The most common frustrations:

1. Export settings (beginners don't understand codecs or bitrates)
2. Timeline navigation (zooming, scrolling)
3. Finding basic tools (where's the cut tool?)
4. Performance issues (slow playback)

The software that handles these best for beginners:
- OpenShot (simple export dialog)
- iMovie (handles everything automatically)
- Web editors (no export settings to worry about)

The best free video editing for beginners 2025 is one that either simplifies or completely handles the technical stuff.
