Windshield wiper replacement - any good hacks?
#1
Windshield wiper replacement should be simple but I always struggle with those stupid connectors. Any home car repair hacks for getting stubborn wiper blades off? Also, what's the best way to know when they actually need replacing versus just cleaning?

Windshield wiper replacement hack: lift the wiper arm away from windshield first (there's usually a tab to press). For stubborn connectors, a little silicone spray helps. Replace when streaking, skipping, or squeaking. Also, clean your windshield regularly - dirt builds up on blades. In winter, lift wipers overnight to prevent freezing to windshield.

Some wiper blades have different connectors: hook, pin, bayonet, etc. Take a picture of your old ones before buying replacements. Also, measure the lengths - they're not always the same left and right. Rain-X treatment on windshield helps water bead off, reducing wiper use and extending blade life.

Clean wiper blades monthly with rubbing alcohol on a paper towel - removes built-up grime. If they're chattering, check that the wiper arm isn't bent (should be parallel to windshield). Sometimes just bending the arm slightly fixes chattering. Replace blades every 6-12 months depending on climate.
