Why might this be a fungal sinus infection, and when should I see a doctor?
#1
I’ve been dealing with this stubborn sinus thing for weeks now, and my doctor mentioned it might be a fungal sinus infection, which honestly surprised me. I always thought those were really rare, but here I am with this pressure and congestion that just won’t quit with the usual antibiotics. Has anyone else gone through something similar and had it turn out to be fungal? I’m just trying to wrap my head around how it even happens.

That sounds exhausting and maddening to live with every day. I can see how a fungal angle would feel surprising yet possible when sinuses stay inflamed and drainage is off.

Fungal sinus infections are rare but not unheard of, especially if imaging or cultures point that way. A doctor might order a CT scan and a sinus culture to check for yeast or molds.

I admit I am skeptical that fungus is the first explanation here, sometimes the language gets loud but the real issue could be persistent inflammation or allergies that mimic infection.

What if this is less about a microbe and more about how the sinuses clear mucus so the pressure sticks around even when antibiotics are tried

Some people report improvement after a change in humidity or using nasal irrigation, even if the diagnosis is fungal or not. Not sure if that helps you but it is a thought.

If you are still dealing with the pressure after weeks a second opinion from an ENT could map out the next steps and keep options open
