Why does meeting an online friend in real life change the chat tone?
#1
Has anyone else felt a weird shift after a friend you met online becomes a friend in real life? We finally met up last weekend, which was great, but now our text conversations feel sort of stiff and forced, like we’re both overthinking it. I’m not sure how to just go back to how things were before.

Ah that shift is real. When you meet someone in person the vibe settles into a different space and the texts can feel stiff after your online friendship. Do you think you both still share the same boundaries?

I wonder if part of it is that we read online chats as a constant and real life adds pauses and silences in an online friendship.

Maybe you two are overcorrecting trying to ride a fresh wave of normal and you just need a slower approach. The online friendship could be morphing into something slightly different. Could you try a low key check in text to reset the pace?

I get why you feel skeptical about the drama here but sometimes real life meetings just reveal that chat culture exaggerates closeness in online friendships.

If you want to reframe think of the real life meeting as a new data point in your friendship not a verdict. What small signal would reassure you that the bond is still there?

Casual and a bit rushed I did this and the chats got weird for a bit but then it loosened up and we kept it simple and friendly.

There is a concept called the liminal phase in social dynamics and it might describe your friendship right now even if the label feels odd.
