Why does cloth animation look stiff, and how can I fix it?
#1
I’ve been trying to get better at animating cloth and fabric, but I keep hitting a wall. No matter how much I tweak the simulation or hand-key the secondary motion, it just feels stiff and unnatural, like it’s made of paper instead of cloth. I’m wondering if anyone else has struggled with this specific thing and what small details you focused on to make it feel more alive.

I get the frustration with cloth that still feels stiff no matter how you tweak the sim the cloth should breathe with gravity and momentum and not read as flat.

Try giving the cloth local damping and different bend stiffness along seams and let folds form where edges and joints stress the message the small local tweaks can sell the motion.

Maybe you are chasing a single motion and not the collage of micro moves that happen in real fabric the tiny flutter at hems and the way edges catch air can sell it.

Maybe the issue is not the physics but the shading and texture you use for the cloth that makes it feel paper thin even with good motion.

What if the aim is to convey the feel of cloth rather than replicate physics exactly the silhouette timing and soft exaggeration can hint at fabric behavior without perfect realism.

Framing this as a problem of stiffness might miss that readers expect cloth to carry character and rhythm rather than be a perfect material test are you sure you want the cloth to behave like real world fabric or a stylized version?
