Why do I hate a protagonist everyone else loves?

I just finished a book that was so hyped up, but I honestly found the main character completely insufferable. Has anyone else ever had that happen, where everyone loves a novel but you just can't stand the protagonist? I feel like I must be missing something everyone else sees.
