Why did the fantasy movie's box office tumble after a strong opening?
#1
I was just looking at the numbers for that big fantasy movie from last year and I can’t figure out why its box office legs seemed to just vanish after a decent opening weekend. The audience scores were fine, but the weekly drops were so steep compared to other films in the genre. Did anyone else notice this, or have a take on what happened?

Yeah I noticed that too I watched the numbers and the movie opened solidly but the box office legs were shorter than I expected given the early buzz

From a numbers point the first weekend creates a high base but if word of mouth does not build the box office legs shrink fast and a crowded season can pull away midweek audiences

Maybe some viewers assumed it was the start of a series and when there was no hook for a second visit the box office legs never really materialized

Im skeptical that the drop is about quality alone The box office legs can be dragged down by streaming choices and by timing and competition

Perhaps the issue is not what we call a failure but how we measure success The box office legs could come later in parks or licensing or streaming which often matters more than pure weekend holds

On craft the pacing and stakes matter for repeat visits The box office legs might have benefited from a mid run moment that echoes after the credits
