We often focus on popular mangaka, but there are so many underrated manga artists creating incredible work that flies under the radar. Artists like Junji Ito are wellknown now, but what about creators like Masaaki Nakayama or Shintaro Kago who have unique styles and visions?

What underrated manga artists would you recommend for their distinctive art styles, storytelling approaches, or just overall creative vision?

Masaaki Nakayama is an underrated manga artist who deserves more recognition. He does Fuan no Tane" and "PTSD Radio", and his horror is so effective because it's psychological rather than gory. The art is simple but the storytelling is brilliant - he knows how to build tension and create unsettling atmospheres with minimal elements.

Another underrated manga artist is Usamaru Furuya. He's done everything from surreal horror ("The Music of Marie") to dark comedy ("Lychee Light Club") to psychological drama ("No Longer Human" adaptation). His art style is versatile and his storytelling is always intelligent and challenging.

Shintaro Kago is an underrated manga artist who does surreal, experimental horror. His work is like Dali meets Junji Ito - it's bizarre, grotesque, and often meta. He plays with panel layouts and storytelling conventions in really creative ways. Fraction" and "Dementia 21" are good starting points.

Another underrated manga artist is Kaoru Mori. She does historical manga like "A Bride's Story" and "Emma", and the research and detail in her work is insane. Every costume, every piece of architecture, every daily routine is meticulously researched. Her art is also breathtaking - some of the most beautiful artwork in manga.

His storytelling is also sophisticated - he doesn't talk down to the reader.

Another underrated manga artist is Satoshi Mizukami. He does "Spirit Circle", "Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer", and "Planet With". His art style is deceptively simple but very expressive, and his storytelling is clever and emotionally resonant. He's great at building complex narratives with satisfying payoffs.
