Which engines are truly bulletproof and can handle 300k+ miles?

I keep hearing about bulletproof engines but I want to know which ones actually deserve that reputation. I'm talking about engines that regularly hit 300k, 400k, even 500k miles with proper maintenance. Not just anecdotal stories but engines with a proven track record across thousands of vehicles. What makes these engines so durable compared to others?

The Toyota 2UZ-FE V8 from the early 2000s Land Cruisers and Tundras is legendary. I've personally seen multiple examples over 400k miles with original engines. The design is simple, overbuilt, and runs at low stress levels. Same with the 1GR-FE V6 in later 4Runners and Tacomas. These are what I consider truly bulletproof engines that can handle extreme mileage with basic care.

Don't forget the Mercedes OM617 diesel from the 80s. Those things are practically immortal. I know someone who has one with 850k miles on it. The 5.9L Cummins in Rams is another one that just keeps going. The key with bulletproof engines seems to be simplicity and low stress operation. Modern engines with tiny turbos running at high boost might make more power but they're working much harder.

From an engineering perspective, what makes an engine bulletproof is conservative design margins. Thicker cylinder walls, lower compression ratios, larger bearing surfaces, and lower specific output. The Honda K-series engines are great examples in the 4-cylinder world. They don't make crazy power per liter but they last forever because they're not stressed. Same with the Toyota 22R-E from the old pickups.

The GM 3800 V6 deserves mention too. Not exciting but incredibly durable. Used in everything from Buicks to Pontiacs to Chevys. I've seen so many of these with 250k+ miles still running smoothly. They're not high performance but they're reliable workhorses. The key is they were used in millions of vehicles over decades so any issues got worked out.
