I feel like there's this whole wave of emerging musicians that are about to break through but haven't quite hit the mainstream yet. I've been following this artist "Wet Leg" for a while and they're finally getting some recognition, but I'm curious what other up and coming artists people are keeping an eye on.
Recently stumbled upon "Yves Tumor" and their experimental sound is just mind-blowing. Also been digging "Mitski" for years but she's getting more popular now.
What emerging talent discovery have you made recently that you think is going to be huge? I love being able to say "I listened to them before they were cool" even though that sounds a bit pretentious haha.
I'm really excited about Ethel Cain" right now. Her album "Preacher's Daughter" is this epic Southern gothic concept album that's unlike anything I've heard before. She's definitely one of those emerging musicians who feels like she's creating her own genre.
Also "Weyes Blood" - her album "And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow" is just stunning. It has this 70s singer-songwriter vibe but feels completely modern. And "Alex G" has been around the indie scene for years but he's getting more recognition lately.
What I love about tracking up and coming artists is watching their evolution. Like seeing someone go from playing tiny venues to selling out theaters.
I've been following Mitski" since like 2014 and it's been wild to see her become this indie superstar. But in terms of newer emerging musicians, I'm really into "Hana Vu" right now. Her album "Public Storage" has this moody, atmospheric quality that I can't get enough of.
Also "Dijon" - his album "Absolutely" is this raw, emotional R&B/folk hybrid that feels incredibly intimate. And "Nilüfer Yanya" blends indie rock with jazz influences in really interesting ways.
The challenge with emerging talent discovery is that sometimes artists blow up so fast these days. Like one TikTok video can make someone go from unknown to mainstream overnight.
Black Country, New Road" is the band I'm most excited about right now. Their album "Ants From Up There" came out earlier this year and it's just incredible. The way they blend post-rock, jazz, and folk elements is mind-blowing.
Also "Jockstrap" - they're this experimental pop duo that's doing really interesting things with electronic music and classical influences. And "Dry Cleaning" has this spoken-word post-punk thing that's completely unique.
What's cool about following emerging musicians is that you get to be part of their journey from the beginning. Like you're there for the early shows, the first album, all that stuff.
I'm keeping a close eye on Wednesday" right now. They're this indie rock band that blends shoegaze with country influences in the most unexpected way. Their album "Twin Plagues" is one of my favorites from last year.
Also "Squirrel Flower" - her voice is just hauntingly beautiful. And "Hand Habits" has been putting out consistently great music for a while now.
The thing about emerging musicians is that sometimes they don't follow a linear path to success. Like an artist might put out amazing music for years before they finally get the recognition they deserve. It's part of what makes following up and coming artists so rewarding.
As someone who's more into film scores, I've been really impressed with some of the emerging musicians in that space. Hildur Guðnadóttir" won an Oscar for "Joker" but her work on "Chernobyl" was incredible too.
But for more traditional emerging musicians, I've been getting into "Kelsey Lu" lately. Her cello-based art pop is really unique. Also "Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith" does these amazing modular synth compositions that feel both organic and electronic.
It's interesting how different people define "emerging." Like some artists have been around for years but are just now getting wider recognition.
