I'm trying to put together a list of classic RPGs that aged well for a friend who's new to the genre. There are so many amazing old school RPGs, but some of them can be really tough to get into if you're used to modern quality of life features.
For me, Final Fantasy VI is the gold standard. The story, characters, and music are all timeless, and the gameplay still holds up remarkably well. EarthBound is another one that feels surprisingly modern in its writing and humor, despite the dated graphics.
But I'm curious what other people think. What classic RPGs would you recommend to someone who wants to experience the best of the genre without dealing with too much frustration from outdated mechanics? I'm looking for games that are accessible but still capture what made those old school video games special.
