Where do you draw the line between wandering and stressing while traveling?

So, we just got back from a week in Lisbon and I’m still thinking about that one afternoon we got completely lost in the Alfama district. My partner loved it, calling it the best part of the trip, but I spent half the time anxious we’d never find our way back to the main square. Does anyone else have that mix of loving the idea of wandering but then feeling genuinely stressed when you’re actually turned around?

That mix is real I love the vibe of wandering through Alfama yet when the streets loop I feel a spike of anxiety about finding my way back to the square.

There is a psychology of cognitive maps the brain relies on landmarks and orientation cues and when those cues misalign the mood shifts from curious to tense.

I heard wandering and pictured a game level so I started talking about quest markers and loot rather than the actual streets.

Maybe the problem is framing the trip as lost rather than as a chance to notice small details the city offers.

What if the real draw is not finding a place but sensing the pattern of movement and how your city self emerges when you relax into it?

Travel writing often overreacts to the fear of getting lost yet the best lines sometimes come from a moment that feels imperfect and unfinished.

I keep a coffee and a map pinned in memory the next time I wander through a maze like Alfama and let the wandering route unfold.
