When is it okay to drive with the check engine light on but no symptoms?
#1
My check engine light came on, but the car seems to be running perfectly fine—no strange noises, no loss of power, nothing. I've read it could be anything from a loose gas cap to a failing sensor. Is it ever actually safe to drive for a short period with the light on but no symptoms, or is that always a terrible idea?

Short answer drive short distances if the light stays steady and you feel nothing odd but do not push it and get a diagnostic soon after

If the light is flashing pull over safely and call roadside help right away This is a sign of a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter

First check the gas cap Its a common fix and easy to do If the cap is tight and light stays on you need an OBD scan to read the codes

Ask an auto parts store to read the codes for free Then decide if you should tow or drive to a shop depending on the code and symptoms

If you want a rule of thumb think of the light as a signal not a verdict Get a diagnosis soon even if the car seems fine
