When does map clutter ruin the sense of adventure in open-world games?

I keep hitting this weird wall with open world games lately where I feel completely overwhelmed by the map icons and just shut it off. I just finished clearing out my third “?” mark camp in a row in this big fantasy RPG and realized I have no idea what the main story is even about anymore. Has anyone else had their sense of adventure just sort of flattened by too much stuff to do?

I know the feeling in open world games the map icons start to feel like a chorus and the main story slips away Some days I just stop and walk away when the world feels crowded

Dense maps steal focus and you burn out faster than you think Try turning off optional icons or setting a simple quest filter for a session to see if the story thread still shines

I used to chase every question mark camp and I kept losing the thread of the plot then I realized I was reading the map more than the world around it

Maybe the wall is not a failure in the game its a signal that the routine is too heavy The main story can survive a break to breathe

What if the cure is not more quests but a tiny clear goal a personal anchor within the open world and then let the rest drift by?

If you want a different tempo you could try playing with the ui off or picking a single region to explore rather than sweeping the whole map do you think that could work?
