What tools do beginners need for a Skyrim follower mod?
#1
I've been playing a lot of Skyrim again and I want to try my hand at creating a simple custom follower mod, but I'm completely lost when it comes to the necessary modding tools. I've downloaded the Creation Kit, but its interface is overwhelming, and I'm not sure what other programs I might need for things like custom textures or voice editing. I have a basic concept and some written dialogue, but I have zero experience with 3D modeling or audio software. For those who have created similar mods, what is the essential toolkit for a beginner? Is there a specific workflow or tutorial series you'd recommend for someone taking their first steps into mod creation? I'm willing to learn, but I need a starting point that won't make me quit in frustration.

Essential toolkit for a Skyrim follower mod: Creation Kit for dialogue and quests, SSEEdit/xEdit to tidy plugins, Blender with the Blender NifTools addon to export/import .nif models, NifSkope for textures and rig tweaks, and Audacity for voice edits. Start simple and test in-game, then iterate. citeturn0search0turn1search4

Take it slow: start with a single follower and a tiny quest; learn CK basics; back up your work and use versioning.

Join a modding Discord or NexusMods group; a second pair of eyes helps, plus shared templates to learn the workflow.

Look for beginner-friendly Skyrim modding series that cover the full pipeline from CK to in-game testing, and begin with a tiny follower mod before expanding.

If you later move into custom assets, keep naming, folders, and resource paths clean to avoid conflicts and make updates easier.
