What surprised you most after switching from a car to a pickup?

So I’ve been driving my old sedan for years, but lately I’ve been seriously thinking about switching to a pickup truck for the extra utility. The thing is, I’ve never actually owned one, and I’m wondering if the day-to-day reality matches the idea. For those of you who made a similar switch from a car to a truck, what was the most unexpected adjustment you had to make?

Going from a car to a pickup was a real shift for me. I felt the seating height change and the hood line loom more than before. Yet the extra utility wins out and I keep adjusting.

Day to day the biggest difference shows in fuel use and in parking the pickup eats up space and in windy roads it handles differently than my old sedan. What surprised me is how often I end up using the tailgate as a makeshift seat.

One thing I misread is how often I actually need a cargo bed not just for tools but for small trips. The pickup feels like a tool that asks for your plan before you use it.

Maybe the question is not car to pickup at all but which tool fits your real needs. Do you haul kids between sports or do you picture it as a daily driver with serious hauling power?

I'm skeptical that the extra cargo bed always pays off. If you rarely haul bulky stuff the pickup can feel more cumbersome than a car.

From a writing angle the pickup can become a character in a scene and the way you describe space shapes the tone It can also reveal what you expect from a vehicle beyond mere transport
