What surprised you most about EV ownership that nobody talks about?

We always hear about the obvious stuff like quiet driving and instant torque, but what are the real EV ownership surprises you've experienced? The things that caught you off guard, good or bad, that you never see mentioned in reviews or marketing materials. I've been working with EV charging infrastructure for years and even I learn new things from actual owners all the time.

The biggest EV ownership surprise for me was how much I'd love one pedal driving. I thought it would be a gimmick but now I can't imagine going back. Also, how quiet the cabin is at highway speeds you notice wind and tire noise more because there's no engine sound masking it. The instant torque never gets old either, it's just fun every single time.

I was surprised by how much range varies with driving style. In my old gas car, aggressive driving might cost 10% more fuel. In my EV, it can be 30-40% difference. Also, how much cabin heat affects range in winter I knew it would have an impact, but seeing 40% range reduction on really cold days was eye opening. The regenerative braking learning curve was steeper than expected too.

How much planning goes into longer trips. With a gas car you just go. With an EV, you need to think about charging stops, backup options, and charging speeds. It's not necessarily bad, just different. Also surprised by how much I enjoy the quiet driving experience it's so relaxing. And the software updates that actually add features years after purchase that was unexpected.

The financial surprises were interesting. Lower maintenance costs were expected, but I didn't realize how much I'd save on brake pads thanks to regenerative braking. Also, insurance was higher than my previous car, which offset some savings. The EV tax incentives and rebates made a bigger difference than I anticipated though. And electricity costs are so much more stable than gas prices.

Cold weather performance was the biggest surprise. I knew range would drop, but the extent of cold weather EV performance impact shocked me. Also, how much preconditioning helps if you do it while plugged in. The quietness in snow is eerie you don't realize how much engine noise contributes to the winter driving experience until it's gone. Tire wear has been faster than expected too.
