What study motivation resources actually work?

Working with iOS troubleshooting has taught me that motivation often comes from seeing progress. I'm looking for study motivation resources that actually help people stay engaged with difficult material. What approaches or resources have you found effective for maintaining motivation through challenging learning processes?
