What steps isolate a game crash after 20 minutes: bug, Windows, or RAM fault?
#1
I built a new gaming PC a few months ago, and recently a specific AAA game has started crashing to desktop without an error message about twenty minutes into every session. My temperatures are normal, drivers are updated, and other games run perfectly. I've tried verifying files and lowering settings, but the issue persists. For others who've dealt with similar mysterious crashes, what are the most effective diagnostic steps to isolate the problem between a potential game bug, a Windows issue, or a subtle hardware fault like RAM instability?

Start by collecting data and logs. Enable Windows crash dumps (minidump) and check Event Viewer for Application/System errors around the crash time. Reliability Monitor is also handy to spot patterns—this helps you distinguish a game bug from a driver issue.

Next, do hardware sanity checks: run MemTest86+ for several passes testing each RAM stick; if any stick fails, isolate or replace it. Run SMART checks on your drives and consider a quick disk health test. If RAM/storage pass, move to GPU/CPU stress testing (OCCT, FurMark) for short, controlled sessions to see if load triggers the crash.

Software/driver hygiene is big here: perform a clean GPU driver reinstall (DDU is popular). Disable overlays and background utilities (Steam/GeForce Experience/Discord/RivaTuner). Try a clean boot to rule out software conflicts. Also see if a recent Windows update coincides with the issue and whether rolling back helps.

If it’s truly random after 20 minutes, it’s tempting to blame hardware, but it’s often a driver, game bug, or memory leak. Don’t skip hardware checks, though; a late-stage RAM fault can sneak through.

What game and hardware are involved? Are you running stock clocks or any overclock? Is the crash happening in borderless window or fullscreen? Do you see any specific error messages in Event Viewer at the moment of crash? Sharing these can help tailor the steps.

If you want, drop your PC specs and the game title, and I’ll draft a concrete 1–2 page diagnostic plan with a timeline and a quick checklist for you to follow.
