What should I tell a kid about finding my life purpose?

So I was at a family gathering last weekend and my cousin’s kid, who’s about seven, asked me point-blank what my purpose in life was. I just kind of stammered and made a joke, but it’s been stuck in my head all week. I honestly don’t have a good answer, and it feels like everyone else my age has it figured out. Has anything like that ever happened to you?

That moment sounds tricky. A seven year old's blunt curiosity can feel like a probe. I have stood in a similar spotlight and stumbled too, and I have learned that purpose shifts as you grow. Maybe it is less about a fixed answer and more about who you try to be in small moments. What tiny thing this week could you do that aligns with that?

For me purpose is not a single spark but a field you map by what you care enough to keep doing even when it costs you a bit. A simple exercise would be to track two days of what you spend energy on and what drains you and then try to extend the energizing bits. Not a verdict just a trend line.

I keep hearing purpose and picture a big destiny but maybe your cousin's kid just wanted a nod and a smile. If I were seven I would want to hear that it is okay to not have a fixed plan yet.

Purpose can feel heavy and the idea of a single destination might not fit real life. People juggle work family and odd hobbies, and perhaps the real pattern is not a single goal but a set of recurring choices. The notion of a fixed purpose can be overhyped.

What if purpose is less a label and more a set of moments that feel meaningful day to day. You borrow purpose from small commitments like helping a friend or learning something and that still counts.

Why must there be one purpose at all maybe the question should be what kinds of moments make life feel coherent rather than a destination.
