What should I look for in a beginner woodworking plan?

I'm a beginner with some basic tools, and I'm looking for my first real project. I've been browsing a lot of free diy woodworking plans online, but I'm having trouble judging which ones are actually suitable for a novice. Some that are labeled "beginner" seem to require a table saw or a router, which I don't have. How do you vet a plan to see if it's truly entry-level before you commit to buying the lumber?
