What should I consider before switching Linux desktop environments?

I’ve been using the same Linux distro for years, but lately I’ve been wondering if I’m missing out by not trying a different desktop environment. My workflow feels a little stale, and I keep hearing friends talk about how switching theirs up changed everything. I’m just not sure if it’s worth the hassle of relearning where everything is or if it’s just a superficial change.
