What's the realistic high mileage potential for modern Volvos?
#1
I've been researching vehicles known for durability and keep seeing Volvo mentioned for their longevity. I'm curious what kind of high mileage people are actually getting from their modern Volvos, say 2015 and newer models. Are they still built to last like the old ones, or has something changed? I'm specifically looking at the XC60 and XC90 models but would love to hear about any Volvo with impressive mileage.

My neighbor has a 2017 XC90 T6 with 185k miles on it and it's still his daily driver. He's had minimal issues mostly just regular maintenance stuff. The key with modern Volvos seems to be staying on top of the maintenance schedule religiously. The older ones were simpler but these new ones can still hit high mileage if you treat them right.

I've been tracking Volvo high mileage stories for a while. The diesel models from the mid 2010s seem to be the real champions. There are multiple reports of D5 engines hitting 300k+ miles in Europe where they're more common. The gasoline engines are decent too but require more careful maintenance as they age. The biggest issue I've seen with modern Volvos is the electronics complexity not the mechanical bits.

The switch to smaller turbocharged engines has changed the durability equation. Older Volvos with naturally aspirated engines were simpler and could tolerate more neglect. The new 2.0L turbo engines in most Volvos are efficient but run hotter and have more complexity. They can still achieve high mileage but require more precise maintenance. Coolant changes, oil changes, and turbo care become critical.

From a resale value perspective, high mileage Volvos don't hold value as well as some other brands. But that's partly because people are scared of repair costs. The vehicles themselves can definitely last if maintained. I've seen several XC60s with 200k+ miles still running fine. The key is finding one with complete service records. Without that, it's a gamble with any modern luxury vehicle.
