What's the best monitor purchase for productivity and gaming?

I'm setting up a new home office and need to choose monitors. This feels like one of those areas where spending a bit more can really pay off, but I'm not sure what features are actually important.
For the best monitor purchase, should I prioritize resolution (4K vs 1440p), refresh rate, panel type (IPS, VA, OLED), or something else? I'll be using it for both work (coding, writing, research) and gaming in the evenings.
Budget is around $500 per monitor, but I could go higher if there's a compelling reason. Also curious about ultrawide vs dual monitor setups. What has worked well for you all?
For mixed use, I'd prioritize resolution and refresh rate equally. A 1440p 144Hz monitor is the sweet spot right now for the best monitor purchase. It gives you enough pixels for productivity while being great for gaming.
