What's the best free digital art software for beginners just starting out?

Hey everyone, I'm completely new to digital art and I'm looking for some good digital art software free download options. I don't have much money to spend right now, so free would be ideal. I've heard about Krita and GIMP, but I'm not sure which one would be better for someone with zero experience.
I'm using a basic drawing tablet that came with some art tablet software free trial, but it expired and now I need something else. What do you guys recommend for absolute beginners? I'm mostly interested in digital painting and maybe some simple illustrations.
Also, are there any good beginner digital art courses free online that would help me learn the basics?
