What's the best approach for smart home integration across different brands?

I'm struggling with getting all my different smart devices to work together properly. What's the best approach for smart home integration when you have devices from multiple manufacturers? Are there specific hubs or platforms that work better for creating a cohesive smart home ecosystem?

For smart home integration across brands, I've had the best luck with platforms like Home Assistant or SmartThings. They act as a universal translator between different devices. The key is checking compatibility before you buy - look for devices that support common standards like Zigbee or Z-Wave, not just proprietary ecosystems.

I recommend sticking to one ecosystem if possible, but if you must mix, choose a hub that supports multiple protocols. The smart home ecosystem you build should be flexible enough to add new devices without starting over. That's where planning ahead saves a lot of frustration with smart home integration.

Matter is becoming the universal standard that should help with this. As more devices adopt it, smart home integration will get much easier. For now, I'd focus on devices that either support Matter or have good API access for custom integration if you're technically inclined.
