What's the best approach for product comparison tests that show real differences?

I'm trying to create some meaningful product comparison tests between different hardware components, but I keep running into the same issue: most benchmarks just show tiny percentage differences that don't really matter in actual use. Like, sure, CPU A is 3% faster in synthetic tests, but does anyone actually notice that?

What kind of product comparison tests have you found that actually reveal meaningful differences in real-world performance? I want to move beyond just running standard benchmarks and show how products actually perform in scenarios that matter to users.

I've moved away from running the same benchmark suite on everything. Instead, I create specific workflows that match how people actually use the products. For example, for photo editing software, I'll actually edit a batch of photos from start to finish. The timing might be less precise than synthetic benchmarks, but it tells you way more about real-world performance.

The key is testing at scale. A product might work fine with a few users but fall apart under load. I run tests that gradually increase load until something breaks, then document what broke and at what load level. This gives users a much better idea of the product's limits than just reporting average performance numbers.

I've found that testing edge cases reveals more meaningful differences than testing normal operation. How does the product perform when resources are constrained? How does it handle unexpected inputs or network failures? Products that handle edge cases well usually have better real-world performance.

For mobile devices, I test battery life during actual use rather than just running battery benchmarks. I'll use the device as my primary phone for a week, tracking screen-on time with my normal usage patterns. This gives a much more realistic picture than synthetic battery tests.
