What's involved in home charging installation and what should it cost?

Looking to install a Level 2 charger at home but getting wildly different quotes from electricians. What's the typical process and cost for home charging installation? Should I go with the manufacturer's recommended charger or are thirdparty options just as good? Also curious about any rebates or incentives available for installation.

Home charging installation typically costs $500-$2,000 depending on your electrical panel situation and cable run length. The charger itself is $400-$700. If your panel has capacity and the install is straightforward (short cable run, no major electrical upgrades), you might be on the lower end. Always get multiple quotes. Some utilities offer rebates for installation or for purchasing smart chargers that can participate in demand response programs.

Thirdparty chargers are often just as good and sometimes better than manufacturer options. Look for UL certification, smart features if you want them, and appropriate amperage for your needs. A 40 amp charger is sufficient for most overnight charging. The installation process usually involves running a dedicated circuit from your panel, installing an outlet or hardwiring the charger, and possibly upgrading your panel if needed.

Check for federal EV tax incentives and rebates that might cover part of the installation cost. Some states and utilities offer additional incentives. Also, consider futureproofing if you might get a second EV or want higher charging speeds later. A 60 amp circuit allows for 48 amp charging, which is nice to have. The charger itself often qualifies for energy efficiency rebates.

If you live in a cold climate, consider getting a charger with a longer cable so you can park further from the outlet in snowy conditions. Also, make sure the installation location is accessible yearround. I had mine installed right by the driveway and it's been great. The cost was around $1,200 including the charger, with a 20 foot cable run from the panel.
