What progress are we making in dark matter research and detection?

Dark matter research continues to be one of the biggest mysteries in physics. Despite decades of searching, we still haven't directly detected it, but the experiments keep getting more sensitive.

What dark matter research approaches seem most promising to you? I'm following both the direct detection experiments deep underground and the indirect searches through astrophysical observations. The null results are actually telling us a lot about what dark matter isn't, which is progress in its own way.

The direct detection experiments keep getting more sensitive, which is progress even when they don't find anything. Each new limit tells us more about what dark matter isn't, which helps narrow down the possibilities.

Some of the dark matter research is looking at lighter particles than originally expected. The WIMP paradigm is being challenged, and researchers are exploring other candidates like axions or sterile neutrinos.

The astrophysical observations are also providing clues about dark matter. Galaxy rotation curves, gravitational lensing, cosmic microwave background patterns - all these point to dark matter's existence and give us information about its properties.

Large-scale structure formation simulations that include dark matter match observations remarkably well. That's indirect evidence but still very compelling.

The theoretical work is just as important as the experimental dark matter research. Understanding what kinds of particles could naturally arise from extensions to the Standard Model, what their properties would be, how they would interact - this guides the experimental searches.

Some of the most interesting dark matter research is at the intersection of particle physics and cosmology. The early universe conditions might have produced dark matter in specific ways that leave observable signatures.
