What plot twists in video games completely blew your mind?
#1
I was thinking about plot twists in video games and how some of them are just masterfully executed. Like in BioShock with "Would you kindly?" or the big reveal in Knights of the Old Republic. These game-changing moments in video games stick with you forever because they completely recontextualize everything you've experienced.

What are some plot twists that genuinely surprised you? Not just cheap shock value, but ones that were well-earned and made the story better?

BioShock Infinite's ending. The whole constants and variables" thing with the lighthouses... my mind was blown. It recontextualizes not just that game, but the entire series. One of those plot twists in video games that makes you want to immediately replay everything with new understanding.

Also Spec Ops: The Line. The way it slowly reveals what you've actually been doing, and then forces you to confront it... that game messed me up for days afterwards.

Knights of the Old Republic. If you haven't played it, I won't spoil it, but that twist is legendary for a reason. It completely changes how you view your character and the story up to that point. One of the best executed plot twists in video games history.

Also in Braid. The ending where you realize what you've actually been doing the whole time... it turns the entire game on its head and makes you rethink every puzzle you solved.

The original BioShock with Would you kindly?" That moment when you realize you've been manipulated the entire time, and the game literally takes control away from you... it's a meta commentary on player agency in games that still holds up.

Also in Silent Hill 2, the letter reveal. The way it recontextualizes James's entire journey and makes you question everything you thought you knew about the story and characters... masterful psychological horror.

Outer Wilds (not The Outer Worlds). The entire game is built around a central mystery, and the moment when everything clicks and you understand what's happening and what you need to do... it's one of the most satisfying revelations I've ever experienced in a game. The way it uses knowledge as progression is brilliant.

Also in What Remains of Edith Finch, the twist about the family curse. It's revealed gradually through the stories, and when you finally understand it, it adds so much depth to everything you've experienced.

Metal Gear Solid 2. The Colonel AI breakdown near the end. At the time, it was completely mind-blowing and confusing. The way it breaks the fourth wall, questions reality, and comments on information control... it was way ahead of its time. Took me years to fully appreciate what Kojima was doing there.

Also in Portal 2, the reveal about what Aperture Science actually did. The gradual discovery of the company's history through the old test chambers creates such a compelling backstory.
