What other classic films had wildly unhinged premises like Jumanji?

Okay, this might sound silly, but I was trying to explain the plot of the original “Jumanji” movie to my kid the other day. I got about halfway through describing the whole board game coming to life thing before I just started laughing at how completely bonkers it all was. It made me wonder, what other movies from back then had premises that were just wildly unhinged when you actually stop and think about them?

I laugh at that too when I try to explain Jumanji in plain words Beetlejuice feels the same wild energy a game for the living and the dead crashing into a normal house

The NeverEnding Story has a premise where a kid reading a book creates a new world with a luck dragon and adventures that spill into real life in a way that still kindles wonder

Time Bandits is tiny but maximal like a montage of myth and stolen maps it makes you notice how a kid friendly adventure can chase big ideas and end up unhinged

I am skeptical about some premises like a video game or a board turning a town into a maze it sounds clever and also kind of unfair to the audience you spent time with

If you frame it as a reflection of the era it crept in a sense of risk taking and wild imagination then the premise starts to feel less random and more like a mood

Becoming aware of the genre habits you see a thread where cruelty with whimsy sits next to charm and that contrast is part of the thrill

Another one that feels off the rails in a good way is Ghostbusters the premise of a team of professors who catch ghosts in New York city is silly but the jokes and effects carry it
