What oil change interval for a RAV4 Hybrid with frequent idling and short trips?
#1
I drive a 2020 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid mostly on short city trips, and I'm confused about the best oil change interval. The manual suggests 10,000 miles with synthetic, but the dealership sticker always says 5,000, and I've heard arguments for both regarding engine longevity, especially with a hybrid's frequent stop-start operation. For other hybrid owners or mechanics, what interval have you found optimal for real-world mixed driving that includes a lot of idling and short trips? Does using a specific type of synthetic oil or filter brand make a meaningful difference in extending the interval safely, and are there any warning signs beyond the maintenance minder to watch for that indicate the oil is breaking down sooner?
