What non-Hollywood films changed how stories are told on screen?
#1
I'm compiling a list for a film studies project that aims to analyze the evolution of cinematic storytelling, and I'm trying to move beyond the usual suspects that dominate every "Best Movies of All Time" list. While I appreciate the technical mastery of classics like Citizen Kane or 2001, I'm more interested in films that had a seismic impact on narrative structure or genre, even if they aren't flawlessly polished. For cinephiles and historians, which movies would you argue fundamentally changed how stories are told on screen, perhaps through nonlinear editing, unreliable narration, or groundbreaking use of sound and perspective? I'm particularly looking for influential works from outside the Hollywood canon that might not get their due in mainstream Western criticism.
