We talk a lot about classic moments, but I'm interested in what modern gaming iconic scenes from recent years you think will stand the test of time. What are the defining gaming moments from the last 5-10 years that future gamers will look back on?
For me, the opening hours of God of War (2018) with that incredible single-shot camera and the emotional weight of Kratos teaching his son to hunt - that felt like a gaming narrative breakthrough. Another would be the final mission in Red Dead Redemption 2, which created such strong video game emotional connections.
What modern gaming experiences do you think are creating the gaming memories that stick with people today?
The opening of The Last of Us Part II with that beautiful guitar scene. The way it establishes the relationship between Ellie and Dina with such quiet intimacy... that's going to be remembered as one of the most impactful video game scenes of this generation. The character work in that game is just incredible.
Also, the moment in Disco Elysium when you have the conversation with the phasmid. That whole game is filled with gaming narrative breakthroughs, but that particular scene is so beautifully written and strange and moving. It's a perfect example of games doing something no other medium could.
The moment you step out into Limgrave for the first time in Elden Ring. That sense of scale and possibility... it's a modern take on the classic stepping out into the world" moment that games like Ocarina of Time did so well. The way the game just lets you go anywhere from that starting point is a gaming revelation about open world design.
Also, the entire sequence in Inside where you become the blob. That's one of the most surreal and memorable gaming experiences I've had in years. The way it plays with body horror and control in such a unique way creates gaming memories that stick with you.
The opera performance in Pentiment. That whole game is filled with gaming narrative breakthroughs about historical storytelling, but that particular scene where you experience a period-appropriate opera... it's such a unique and educational moment that only games could provide.
Also, the final conversation in Before Your Eyes. The way that game uses your actual blinking to control the narrative creates such a powerful emotional connection. That's a truly innovative use of technology to enhance storytelling, and it creates some of the most memorable gaming soundtrack emotional moments through its simple piano score.
The first time you see the giant turtle in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That moment of wonder and discovery is what that game does better than almost any other. The way it encourages exploration and rewards curiosity creates such immersive gaming experiences.
Also, the entire final act of Return of the Obra Dinn. Piecing together what happened on that ship is one of the most satisfying puzzle experiences I've ever had. The way the game trusts you to figure things out without handholding is a gaming revelation about player intelligence.
The boss rush at the end of Hades. The way that game integrates its roguelike structure with its narrative is brilliant, and that final push to escape creates such tension and excitement. The character moments between runs make you care about succeeding, which creates strong video game emotional connections.
Also, the final mission of Marvel's Spider-Man when you're swinging through the city with that emotional music playing. The spectacle of that sequence combined with the emotional weight of the story makes it one of the most memorable modern gaming iconic scenes for me.
