What metrics should i track for a smoke test on a productivity app?
#1
I have an idea for a productivity app, and before I sink months into building it, I want to run a smoke test startup idea to see if anyone would actually pay for it. I set up a simple landing page, but I'm stuck on what to actually measure—is getting email sign-ups enough, or do I need to simulate a purchase to get real validation?

Email signups can be a start for validation but they are not the whole story You want to test willingness to pay and real interest too Build a tiny pricing page and see if people would pay

Signups alone are easy to game Some people call it validation but real validation usually means a purchase or a clear commitment If you can run a mock checkout or a wait list you will see how serious people are What would you test first

Track simple metrics to avoid vanity numbers Like signup rate clicks on pricing and whether people complete a trial See what flows work and where people drop off

Use a faux cart or a captured email waitlist to simulate buying The point is to measure intent without building a heavy checkout flow

Split tests can help A plain landing with two different pitches and price points can reveal which message resonates more

Keep it honest and transparent with testers Explain what you are testing and how results will be used That clarity often improves engagement
