What lighting setups reduce harsh shadows and improve DOF in field macro?
#1
I'm an amateur photographer trying to improve my macro shots of insects and small flora, but I'm constantly battling harsh shadows and insufficient depth of field, even with a ring flash. My subjects often look flat or have distracting highlights. For experienced macro photographers, what lighting setups have you found most effective for creating soft, dimensional light in the field? How do you balance the need for a small aperture with the light loss it creates, and are there specific diffusers or reflectors you recommend for portable use that can handle the challenges of natural sunlight and close working distances?
