What helped you get over the early virtual reality hesitation in Half-Life: Alyx?
#1
So I finally got a proper VR headset and jumped into Half-Life: Alyx last night. The sheer sense of presence was incredible, but I actually found myself weirdly hesitant to move around or reach for things in the environment, like my brain was fighting the immersion. Did anyone else feel this kind of physical hesitation at first, like you were about to bump into a real wall that wasn't there?

I felt that too the sense of presence in Alyx was almost overwhelming and my brain froze on moving as if there was a real wall there I eased into it and the hesitation faded after a bit

That pause comes from a mismatch between your body senses and the visuals it makes presence feel real at first until you build trust with the space and learn safe ways to move

I initially feared a hidden obstacle in the room but what happened more was your mind drafting a safe boundary it learns the scale and the exact reach of your hands in presence

I know it sounds soft but the hesitation is not a failure it is a signal about how immersive the game is and it hints at the comfort options and pacing that shape presence

I would reframe the issue a bit what matters is how you approach the space not how fast you cover it presence comes from rhythm and context more than sprinting forward

nodding to the couch I started with very small moves and watched the environment breathe presence stayed impressive and the initial shock wore off as I found the lines on the floor

I wonder if some people will tolerate a lot of collision tech while others want a gentler mode the point for presence is that the room and the game meet you where you are
