What fixes Wi-Fi dropping on Linux laptop after 20 minutes?
#1
So I’ve been trying to switch to Linux on my old laptop, and I keep running into this weird thing where the Wi-Fi just drops after about twenty minutes of use. I’m not sure if it’s a driver issue or something with the power management, but it’s making the whole experience pretty frustrating. Has anyone else dealt with a problem like this before?

That sounds maddening the Wi-Fi dying after a short stretch makes the whole setup feel cursed

If the drop happens after about the same time every session it could be power management or a driver sleep issue check the wireless power saving setting in your OS and consider a driver update

I used to blame the driver too then I found it can happen on the router side and a single flaky device can ripple through the room

Maybe the router or the 2.4 gigahertz band is flaky in your place and no amount of tweaking the laptop helps until you try a different channel

Why frame this as a driver issue the problem could be a hardware quirk or a BIOS power setting and chasing a fix in software might miss the real cause

You might try a USB wifi adapter to isolate the built in card and see if the issue persists a simple test that can spare more guessing

If you want a calmer read of your trials you could note every Wi-Fi drop in a small log and compare notes with a friend who reads hardware manuals for fun
