What film scores defined turning points in cinema music and why?
#1
I'm a composer trying to study the masters, and I'm creating a personal curriculum by analyzing what many consider the best film scores of all time, from the epic romanticism of John Williams to the innovative minimalism of someone like Jonny Greenwood. While I appreciate the technical brilliance, I'm more interested in scores that fundamentally changed how music functions in cinema, like the way Bernard Herrmann's strings in "Psycho" became a character themselves or how Vangelis's synth work in "Blade Runner" defined an entire genre's aesthetic. For other students of film music, which scores do you believe represent true turning points in the art form, and what specific compositional techniques or recording innovations make them stand the test of time as more than just background music?
