What film festivals this year have the best mix of mainstream and indie content?

I love film festivals but I'm getting tired of events that are either all Hollywood blockbusters or so indie that nothing is accessible. I'm looking for film festivals this year that strike a good balance - where I can see some big premieres but also discover amazing smaller films.

I've been to Sundance and TIFF before, but they're getting so expensive and crowded. Are there other film festivals this year that offer a similar quality mix but maybe with better crowd management or more reasonable prices?

I'm particularly interested in film festivals this year that have strong programming for international cinema and documentaries. Any recommendations?

There are some fantastic regional film festivals this year that have really strong programming without the crowds and prices of Sundance or TIFF. I went to one in the Pacific Northwest that had an amazing mix of international films, documentaries, and local productions. The Q&A sessions were actually intimate enough to ask real questions, which never happens at the huge film festivals this year.

I've noticed some film festivals this year are doing really interesting theme-based programming. Instead of just showing a bunch of unrelated films, they curate around specific topics or styles. There's one focusing on climate change documentaries paired with environmental art installations, and another that's all about films that experiment with narrative structure. Those film festivals this year feel more cohesive and meaningful.

For international cinema, some of the best film festivals this year are the ones organized by cultural institutes or embassies. They often have amazing selections that don't get wide distribution, and the ticket prices are usually reasonable. I've discovered so many incredible filmmakers through these smaller film festivals this year that I never would have seen at the major events.

As a film critic, I think some of the most interesting film festivals this year are the ones that include educational components. There's a festival that pairs screenings with filmmaker workshops and panel discussions about the craft. Those film festivals this year are great for both casual viewers and people who want to understand the filmmaking process better. The mix of entertainment and education creates a richer experience.
