What evidence do we have for dark matter?

Dark matter is supposed to make up most of the matter in the universe, but we can't see it directly. So what dark matter evidence actually exists? I've heard about galaxy rotation curves and gravitational lensing, but I'm not sure I understand how these provide evidence. What are the strongest pieces of evidence for dark matter? And are there any alternative explanations that don't require dark matter?
