What essential films are missing from mainstream top 100 lists?
#1
I'm trying to compile a personal list of essential films to watch, and while I've seen many of the usual suspects on popular "greatest of all time" lists, I find they often heavily favor a specific era, genre, or cultural perspective, usually American cinema from the 70s onward. I want to create a more balanced and globally representative list that includes significant works from silent film, international movements like French New Wave and Japanese Golden Age, and groundbreaking documentaries. For serious cinephiles, what are the most glaring omissions you typically see in mainstream top 100 lists, and which films would you consider indispensable for understanding the artistic and technical evolution of the medium, regardless of their mainstream popularity or accessibility?
