What does that last shot's smile really mean at the end?

Okay, I just finished watching that movie and I’m stuck on the very last shot. What was the deal with the character just smiling slightly as they turned away? My friend says it was a sign of acceptance, but to me it felt more like they’d just had a sinister realization. I can’t figure out which read is right and it’s bugging me. Did anyone else walk away with that kind of confusion about the final moment?

That slight smile in the final moment reads as a quiet acceptance from the character and a sense they carried the outcome without exploding into emotion

Maybe the smile is just camera trickery not a reveal about fate or intent

To me that grin felt like the villain catching a breath not relief

Rather than a verdict the last shot might be a prompt inviting us to fill the rest with our own doubts

In the final moment the audience projects their own read on the face

Genre habits can set a mood and the smile plays with that mood rather than delivering a clear message

Anyone else notice the way the light escapes the frame right as the smile appears and does that push you toward doubt
