What do I do about proof of insurance when moving states and registering my car?

I just moved to a new state and need to register my car here. The DMV website says I need proof of insurance for car registration, but my current policy is from my old state. My insurance company says they can't issue a new policy or ID card until the car is registered in the new state, which feels like a catch-22. How do people usually handle this timing issue? Do I just show them my old policy and hope they accept it?
