What do best-of movie lists actually tell us about finding great films?

I was looking at one of those best movies of 2024 lists and realized I hadn't even heard of half the films on it. It seems like the critical darlings are getting further and further from what's playing at my local multiplex. Are these lists still a good way to find something great, or are they just reflecting a very specific bubble of festival and indie releases?

I still skim those best of 2024 lists, but I treat them as a starting point rather than gospel; critics chase festival buzz and awards more than broad audience appeal, which can leave out crowd favorites. You find any outlets you actually trust these days?

The thing is, lists reflect a bubble, and what plays in a city festival might not land at your local theater; that doesn't mean they're useless, you just need to pull the thread. Which films would you love to see that never show up on the lists?

A practical approach is to pick 2–3 titles from different lists, check streaming or theater availability, read a couple of quick reviews, and then decide. Do you tend to shadow the lists with a couple of indie picks you know you’ll like?

I’ve found some gems by checking social media chatter and audience scores alongside critic lists, especially for genre films that critics aren’t all in on. Do you tend to trust audience sentiment more for the offbeat stuff?

Remember that best can be subjective; I’ve enjoyed movies that were nowhere near the year-end lists simply because they hit the right vibe for me. What’s your last great under-the-radar find?

If you want to expand beyond the hype, target non-narrative stuff, regional cinema, or mid-budget releases that might not be on every list but are worth a shot; what’s the strangest film you discovered this way?
