What did you think of The Ministry of Time's pacing, romance, and ending?

I just finished "The Ministry of Time" and I'm still processing its blend of historical fiction, romance, and speculative thriller elements, which was ambitious but left me with mixed feelings about its pacing and character development. I've read a few book reviews that praised its originality, but I found the second half meandered compared to the tight, intriguing setup. For others who have read it, what was your overall take on the novel's execution? Do you think the central romance was compelling enough to anchor the wilder plot elements, and how did you interpret the ending, which felt deliberately ambiguous to me?

Mixed feelings here too. The opening setup was punchy, but the middle felt a little bloated, with too many ideas competing. The romance did give the story an emotional through-line, but it didn't always feel enough to stabilize the later twists.

I agree the romance was a solid anchor during the calmer moments; when the speculative thriller elements kicked in, I wanted more coherence between themes. Some chapters sang, others felt clunky.

Ending felt deliberately ambiguous, which I usually like, but I left with more questions than clues about what mattered most: memory, duty, or love? It’s the kind of finish that begs a re-read to pick up on foreshadowing you missed.

Ultimately, I think it’s an ambitious experiment rather than a perfect execution. The book risks sprawling, but in a way that sometimes resonates. If you enjoy hybridity and philosophical questions, it’s rewarding; if you want tight plotting, maybe not.

To me, the central romance worked best when it intersected with time-travel stakes—smaller scenes between lovers felt intimate and human, while the thriller machinery added tension. A stronger payoff in the last act might have sealed it, though.

Did you find any threads that felt earned by the end? I felt some elements tied up too neatly while others teased more complexity. Overall I’d recommend a read-along with discussion groups to unpack it.
